The Midwest Classic Movie Series takes movies from the 1910's to the 1960's that have stood the test of time to be considered classic and puts them where they belong - back on the big screen. The Historic Midwest Theater is the perfect setting to watch these films as it transports you back to the era they were released in. Whether you saw them on one of their original runs or only on TV, make your way to a M.C.M. screening on the 3rd Saturday of the Month.
August is Alfred Hitchcock month here at the M.C.M. celebrating the birth month of the famed director. This year we’re showing the first movie Hitchcock directed in America - Rebecca - 85th Anniversary.
While in Monte Carlo, a young woman (Joan Fontaine) falls in love with a wealthy widower, Maxim de Winter (Laurence Oliver) and the two soon marry. The honeymoon is over though when the new Mr. & Mrs. de Winter move back home to his estate, Manderley, a large country estate in Cornwall. There the young bride finds a house that is haunted by the memory of the 1st Mrs. de Winter, who died a year ago in a boating accident. No one holds onto Rebecca’s memory harder than the house maid Mrs. Danvers, who psychologically breaks down the new Mrs. Danvers with constant reminders and unfavorable comparisons to the 1st Mrs. de Winter. Maxim also seems unable to let the memory of Rebecca go and the young woman will not find happiness until she discovers the dark secret at the heart of Manderley.
Rebbecca is the first and only Hitchcock film to win the Best Picture Oscar (1941) and the first time he was nominated for Best Director, he would get nominated four more times but never win.
