Explore more than a century of history at West Overton’s summer camp! Kids ages 8-12 can have fun with historical hands-on activities, crafts, games, and demonstrations. Each day has a different theme with activities presented by West Overton Village and our exciting community partners:
Homesteading in the 19th Century – Learn about life on the 1830s Overholt Homestead. Make your own butter, see cooking demonstrations, and play with vintage toys and games, then join the Pennsylvania Game Commission for an activity about historic fur trapping.
Agriculture – Take a walking field trip to our neighbors', Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association, to see historic farming machines in action. In our Museum, the historic gristmill building, explore grain harvesting tools up close and mill your own grain.
Arts & Crafts – Discover historic textile arts and dye your own fabric. Make a work of art from found materials with The Ruins Project. Get creative in Catherine's Craft Room, located in the historic general store at West Overton.
Industry – Learn about the history of coal mining, then explore the impacts of industry with Jacobs Creek Watershed Association. Make a mosaic with the Pittsburgh Glass Center. We’ll head back to Fort Allen for blacksmithing demonstrations.
Plants & Pollinators – Explore plants in our historic gardens, and learn about insects and the importance of healthy ecosystems with Penn State Master Gardeners.
On Friday afternoon, families and friends are invited to celebrate the end of camp with a slideshow of the week’s activities and some sweet treats!
