Beckview Studios in Scarborough, will be hosting a Masterclass in recording to Analogue Tape on Saturday 5th July 2025. Utilising the studio's pristine condition MCI JH-24 24 track 2" tape machine, in house studio engineer Chris Jones, alongside BBC trained studio support engineer Iain Betson from Reel Resilience, will take you through the demystifying processes of using tape in a session during this all day event.
The days will focus on artistic considerations and operations. And will cover topics including:
An overview of tape and the tape-recording process
Selecting a tape type for your machine
Setting the tape and the recorder up for a session
Developing best practise skills during a session,
Using the format to your artistic advantage
Managing your own and client expectations.
There will be plenty of opportunity for hands-on experience, questions, and networking.
About the engineers:
Iain Betson honed his craft at Broadcasting House and Maida Vale and is widely considered one of the foremost authorities on reel-to-reel format in the UK. Iain will be joining Beckview Studios chief engineer Chris Jones.

Chris has a background in live sound recording and music technology education, before opening his destination recording studio in Scarborough in 2023.
