ARTS Southeast is pleased to present "Whistling in the Dark," a Solo Exhibition by Debora Oden, on display in The Ellis Gallery at ARTS Southeast from July 4th – August 16th, 2025.
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, July 4th from 5 - 9PM in conjunction with First Fridays in Starland
About the Exhibition: Artist Statement
"Whistling in the Dark" is a collection of works exploring the role of abstraction and play as a method of navigating the beauty and chaos of our contemporary life on earth. The works are created with oil-based inks, printed on paper, then mounted onto panels. The creation of these pieces begins and ends through monoprint processes where Oden navigates energy, conflict, and boundaries (both real and imagined) and their influence on the movement of matter. The artist thinks of these works as moving images. Marks spill, they crash, they block, and they bounce, the action to be completed in the viewer's mind. Everything is in a state of flux; the only constant is change.
