MARMALADE (UK, 2024)
From time to time, CinemaSavannah likes to feature underrated and little-known films that should have captured critical and popular attention. Marmalade, Keir O’Donnell’s 2024 debut (which he also co-wrote) is a perfect example. A UK production shot mostly in Minnesota, the film is a wonderfully inventive rollercoaster ride, a wild mix of rom-com, comedy, and a crime thriller, both brilliantly woven and unfolded. Led by the electrifying cast and dynamic score, Marmalade has the making of a cult favorite.
Recently incarcerated Baron (Joe Keery) strikes up a friendship with cellmate Otis (Aldis Hodge), a man with a well-versed history of prison breaks. As the pair hatch an escape plan together, Baron recalls the story of how he met Marmalade (Camila Morrone), the love of his life, and their “Bonnie and Clyde” style scheme to rob a bank in order to care for his sick mother and give them a life they’ve dreamed of. CinemaSavannah will screen the full, distributor version of the film. 100 minutes.
“This is a movie that deserves to be discovered, to be recommended to friends, and to develop a cult following that lingers on. It's just too much fun to settle for less.” Collider
“Keir O'Donnell’s delightful feature debut Marmalade is the kind of comedy that zigs when you expect it to zag, like a carnival ride that catches you by surprise.” RogerEbert.com
“Marmalade is a fun circumvention of the Bonnie and Clyde narrative that is smarter than what it leads you to believe.” Loud and Clear
“Marmalade is the perfect example of never judging a film by its cover: there’s a lot more going on under the surface of this crime outing than its overly folksy first impression indicates” The Upcoming
