Gamelan Encantada joins us from Albuquerque to share Indonesian music from the courtly traditions of Central Java and contemporary American compositions. The performance traverses centuries and continents—highlighting the meditative cycles of classical Javanese music and the experimental spirit of American composers. Founder and artistic director Jenny DeBouzek (MA in Anthropology and Folklore, UC Berkeley) leads the ensemble.
Traditional Javanese gamelan music is a highly structured, ensemble-based form of music from Central Java, Indonesia, known for its shimmering, layered sound and cyclical rhythms. It is performed on a set of tuned percussion instruments—primarily bronze gongs, metallophones, and drums—often accompanied by vocals, rebab (spike fiddle), and other instruments.
Emerging in the mid-20th century—most notably through composers Lou Harrison and Barbara Benary—American gamelan is inspired by traditional Indonesian gamelan and adapted through Western compositional approaches including experimental tuning and non-traditional instrumentation. Many gamelans built in the U.S. use alternative materials such as aluminum or steel and are often tuned to custom modes.
The instruments of Gamelan Encantada include gongs and drums imported from Java and instruments built by Barbara Benary in 1991.
