Honoring Tradition and Innovation: Presentation about Santa Fe’s Indian Market

Join the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe during Indian Market for a presentation and discussion about the history of this annual event on Sun., Aug. 17, 1 - 2 p.m.

Cathy Notarnicola, Curator at the New Mexico History Museum, and Elisa Phelps, Head of Curatorial Affairs at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology, will discuss how Santa Fe’s Indian Market evolved to become the world's largest and most prestigious market and will also share more about other Native American Art markets that take place throughout the country.

Each August, an estimated 100,000 people attend the largest juried Native American art show in the world: the Southwestern Association of American Indian Arts’ (SWAIA) annual Indian Market and art competition. This remarkable event takes place in the central plaza of Santa Fe and supports more than 1,000 Native artists from more than 200 tribal communities in North America and Canada. Artists show their latest work and compete for awards in SWAIA’s judged art competition. Santa Fe’s Indian Market has endured for more than 100 years and generates an estimated $160 million annually in revenue for artists, their families, communities, and the local economy.

Admission to the museum and presentation is free.
