SYNOPSIS:
“Blue Desert” is a darkly humorous, poetic, and surreal exploration of regret, estrangement, and the magical liminality of the desert. When Ruby and her estranged father Max set out to scatter her mother’s ashes in a remote spot once beloved by the family, their fragile attempt at reconciliation is interrupted when they stumble into a lonely, fading desert tavern on the edge of reality.
The tavern’s owner, a man clinging to his past, has invited a mysterious curandera/bruja to conduct a final ritual—or perhaps cast a final curse—on the bar before it shuts down forever. The story blends family drama, borderland mysticism, sacred mushrooms, poetry, horror flicks, and the heat-drenched clarity of the American Southwest.
ROLES:
RUBY (Female, early 30s)
Independent, sharp-witted, and emotionally guarded. Ruby is processing the loss of her mother and years of emotional distance from her father. Wounded but not weak, she uses humor as a shield.
MAX (Male, late 50s to early 60s)
Trim, fit, and rugged; looks younger than his age. Max is a man who avoids emotional conflict, now trying—perhaps too late—to reconnect with his daughter. He masks his guilt with charm and optimism.
ALFONSO (Male, mid-50s)
Owner of the desert tavern. A grizzled romantic with a faded dream, Alfonso is grounded, warm, and quietly philosophical. He’s haunted by his attachment to the bar and what it represents.
ESPERANZA MAPÁCHE (Female, indeterminate age)
A mysterious, compelling figure of indeterminate age, Esperanza is a local curandera, shaman, or self-proclaimed witch. Enigmatic and intense, she carries a deep knowledge of the land and the unseen. Speaks with poetic conviction. Larger than life character.
