SANDOWN MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE: IRISH IMMIGRANT SOLDIER REMEMBERED
The Town of Sandown will observe Memorial Day at 10:00AM, Monday, May 26, 2025 with a Service in the Old Meeting House at 31 Fremont Road. Each year, Lieutenant Colonel(ret) Kevin Major honors a local servicemember killed in one of our nation’s wars with a tribute story.
This year Lt Col Major will tell the story of the loss of a Substitute Soldier for Sandown during the American Civil War. This young Irish Immigrant farm laborer was paid by the town to serve in the place of a Drafted Sandown man. In 1863, using tax money to hire substitute soldiers was legal in New Hampshire and was practiced by all area towns. Come and learn of this man and other immigrants from the surrounding communities who fought in place of drafted area men at a time when recruits were scarce.
The Service starts promptly at 10:00AM. Doors open at 9:15AM with plenty of available seating in the Old Meeting House. The Sandown Police will close Fremont Road to allow street parking. Parking for Seniors or the Disabled is available on the Meeting House grounds.
• All veterans in attendance will be recognized.
• Music for the event will be provided by the Timberlane Regional High School and Middle School Choirs, by other local area performers.
• There will be no parade this year.
Remember: All attendees are asked to be seated prior to 10:00AM.
