Completing the Circuit is a site-specific immersive installation inspired by the success of artist Iris Okoro's senior design project, the Artistic Automaton—an autonomous robotic drawing arm that translates user-submitted images into stylized line art. That engineering project, which won the Best Project Faculty Choice Award at Texas State University’s Ingram School of Engineering in Spring 2025, sparked deeper reflection on the role of ritual, expression, and elemental symbolism in bridging the gap between human creativity and machine logic.
This installation extends that dialogue—inviting viewers into a contemplative sensory circuit through the four classical elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Each elemental node is represented as a tactile, minimalist vignette, layered with subtle responsive electronics. The experience unfolds through a circular path, inviting sensory engagement and gentle interaction—mirroring cycles of transformation, feedback, and connection within living systems.
Rather than fixed representations, the elements act as living metaphors: Fire flickers with movement, Water shimmers in reflection, Earth grounds through vibration, and Air responds to unseen presence. If time allows, a central node will also be created—one that pulses quietly, resonating the energy exchanged throughout the space.
As Okoro's first solo showcase following the completion of his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Completing the Circuit is both a continuation and a departure—a poetic expression of technical training, spiritual curiosity, and creative identity. Rooted in the legacy of the Artistic Automaton, this project embraces the messy, magical feedback loop between humanity, nature, and machine—offering the public a quiet invitation to step inside… and complete the circuit.
