How to Lead Group Rides: In-Person & On-Bike Ride Leader Training

Group Ride Leader Training is an in-person workshop to empower community members to host fun, casual group rides for their friends, family, and community.

To start, we level-set with a presentation-style lesson on the basics. This is followed by hands-on bike handling practice. We then go out on the road to practice leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.

Taught by League of American Bicyclist Certified Instructors, we review the fundamentals of managing this unique type of group activity, including:

• What gear to bring
• Building comfortable routes
• What information to share with the group
• Skills of riding on the road

• Bike for our on-bike portion
• Helmet to keep your noggin safe
• Your normal stuff you bring when you ride for show and tell
• Water/snacks though we will provide some refreshments too

1-1:30 PM - Meet, intros, ice breaker: what's your most pressing question / areas of interest?

1:30-2:00 PM - Review safe group riding presentation

2:00-2:30 PM - Gear review, ABC Quick Check, helmet fitting

2:30-2:45 PM Drills - Parking lot drills for scanning and signaling

2:45-3:45 PM - Take turns leading us on the road on a practical, useful route.

3:45-4:00 PM - Debrief. We often stay afterwards and grab some food nearby.
