The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark in North America is organizing a workshop in San Francisco, aimed at bringing together California’s stakeholders and universities to explore best practices and solutions from Denmark around district energy and energy efficiency within buildings.
Organized by the Sustainable Urban Development team, the focus of the workshop is on how to leverage low-carbon solutions to support long-term strategic priorities that create resilient cities and campuses while achieving GHG reduction targets.
Info: The opening keynote presentation by Commissioner McAllister will highlight the importance of building energy efficiency and decarbonization in California, as well as the critical role of international engagement and collaboration in advancing decarbonization across the built environment.
Info: The Danish Energy Agency will present Denmark's sustainable urban development model, emphasizing the importance of energy-efficient buildings and district energy, and their integration to foster sustainable community-scale development. The DEA will showcase successful examples from Denmark to illustrate this approach
Info: This keynote from Cordia will explore how Danish and broader Scandinavian policy framework, such as mandatory municipal thermal planning, the move to reduce reliance on fossil fuel boilers in favor of cleaner, low-carbon alternatives, and the implementation of regulatory tools like building codes and local ordinances, can inform efforts to deliver cost-effective, low-carbon district heating across California.
Drawing on Cordia’s legacy in San Francisco as a long-standing, PUC-regulated thermal district energy provider with over a century of distribution experience, the presentation will showcase successful public-private partnerships and the integration of clean energy technologies.
It will also highlight the importance of international collaboration in accelerating the decarbonization of the built environment, particularly within today’s dynamic political and regulatory landscape.
Info: This discussion will focus on the challenges and gaps in developing energy-efficient and cost effective retrofits at scale. Panelists include Stanford University, City of San Francisco and Tishman Speyer, moderated by UC Berkeley. Key topics will include green building standards for existing buildings, portfolio retrofits, technologies to advance energy reduction through operational and envelope retrofits.
Info: Retrofit and new building solutions for building envelopes, including Solarlab technologies and Rockwool insulation, provide an effective strategy to improve energy efficiency, reduce GHG emissions, and achieve long-term cost savings. Additionally, CBrain's digital permitting and grant management solutions can streamline the development process, helping to meet the urgent demand for sustainable housing.
Info: Join us for an engaging panel discussion featuring industry leaders from Ever-Green, Cordia, and Pacific Gas & Electric as they explore the pivotal role of district energy in decarbonizing California. In this dynamic session, facilitated by Michelle Malanca Frey, the panelists will delve into innovative strategies that leverage district energy systems to significantly reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency, and support sustainable urban development. They will also examine evolving regulatory frameworks and collaborative approaches critical to integrating low-carbon solutions on a broad scale.
Info: This session will include case studies from Ramboll, who will share insights from their work across State University of New York (SUNY) and also showcase their work in Utah that is in collaboration with Corix. The pre-insulated piping manufacturer Logstor will speak to the benefits of using the European Standard EN253 in university systems including Princeton, Stanford and others. MAN Energy Solutions will be providing a presentation with Vicinity on their implementation of industrial scale heat pumps to accelerate decarbonization efforts. DESMI will showcase case stories around how their plug and play, energy efficient pump solutions, optimize hydraulic performance and reduce lifecycle energy use across both combined heat and power (CHP) plants and district energy distribution networks.
Info: In this breakout session on building retrofits, we will focus on how cities and campuses can lead the way in climate-resilient design through comprehensive building envelope upgrades. The discussion will explore innovative methods, from enhancing insulation and upgrading glazing to integrating smart shading and thermal control systems, that not only boost energy efficiency but also improve occupant comfort and durability against extreme weather events. Participants will share successes, challenges, and future opportunities for retrofitting structures, highlighting case studies where such upgrades have transformed aging buildings into sustainable and resilient assets.
Info: In this breakout session ,we’ll dive into the multifaceted world of ambient district energy systems/ thermal energy networks (TENs) and geothermal networks (GENs) that are reshaping urban heating and cooling. Participants will discuss how thermal energy networks are transforming traditional steam-based approaches through steam-to-hot water conversions. We will also explore the strategic integration of industrial-scale heat pumps, which are proving instrumental in enhancing system efficiency while reducing carbon emissions.
This conversation aims to highlight both the technical advancements and the broader operational implications necessary to support a reliable, scalable, and sustainable transition in district energy infrastructure
