About the event

Queer Religion: The Exhibition
The goal of this collection of photographs by artist Frances Marshall is to force conversation between two of the greatest paradoxes that exist today: Queerness and Religion. As a queer atheist Marshall wants to spotlight and celebrate prominent openly queer leaders in religion. These subjects risk so much personally in order to live in their truth and create positive change within the monotheistic religions. The subjects captured provide a safe space within institutions that historically have promoted queerphobia.

Marshall is constantly fascinated by what each of us sees as unfamiliar or other, looking deeply into paradoxes and recognizing our biases and judgements that hang on us like chains. These chains cause us to shrink our empathy and limit our ability to connect, and remaining curious today seems like the greatest obstacle for many of us. Through her work she is learning new perspectives about not only a community that she belongs to but the nuances of intersectionality that she has never before considered. She hopes that with her work, she opens hearts and minds to being more curious rather than judgmental while always coming from a place of empathy and sensitivity to a person’s experience that is different from one’s own. It’s paramount to her that the subjects that she works with have a dominant voice, that there’s no sense of voyeurism or exploitation. Learn more.

“Without a bit of queerness, religion can grow rigid and sour. Queer people and perspectives offer renewal, an opening out to those who would otherwise turn away. The ultimate queerness we can approach is the divine, the totally other which is also the elusive meaning within ourselves.” — Rabbi Mark Solomon
