Recognized today as one of the leading contemporary Brazilian 7-string guitarists, Julio Lemos follows in the tradition of great masters such as Rafael Rabello and Dino Sete Cordas. His performance will feature a stunning set of original compositions and classic pieces by Brazilian icons including Baden Powell, Tom Jobim, Rafael Rabello, Garoto, and more. With the brilliant accompaniment of Brian Rice on pandeiro, this duo will present a richly expressive concert that celebrates the depth, virtuosity, and soul of Brazilian instrumental music.

is a virtuoso 7-string guitarist specializing in Brazilian instrumental music, blending classical guitar technique with influences from Villa-Lobos, Radamés Gnattali, and the choro and samba traditions, inspired by Dino 7 Cordas, Rafael Rabelo, Baden Powell, and Marco Pereira. A professor at the Federal University of Goiás since 2010, he holds a doctorate in music and has recorded with renowned artists like Hermeto Pascoal and Carlos Malta. His international career includes tours and workshops across Europe, the U.S., and China, as well as judging the São Paulo carnival. In 2023 and 2024, he performed extensively in Brazil and abroad, collaborated with major artists, and released his CD/DVD Julio Lemos Brasil Acústico, reinforcing his role as a representative of Brazilian music. Percussionist specializes in both Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion. Brian is a founding member of the Berkeley Choro Ensemble and is frequently called upon for his expertise on the pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine). In 2023, Brian premiered Danzas #4 for pandeiro and orchestra with the Diablo Symphony by Felipe Senna. Brian has worked with Mike Marshall, Jovino Santos Neto, Spok, Claudia Villela, and Alessandro Penezzi, among others. Brian performed at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, the Savannah Music Festival, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert with the Danilo Brito Quintet. In July 2019, Brian celebrated the release of his first self-produced choro CD, Três Baías, with Almir Côrtes and Nando Duarte. Brian is the co-founder and artistic director of the Berkeley Festival of Choro and teaches Samba School and the Afro-Cuban Ensembles at UC Davis. Follow his work on Facebook!
