Join us for a special screening of 7 Visions, a cinematic shadow theater work written by acclaimed playwright Octavio Solis and directed by shadow master Larry Reed. The story follows a young monk named Encarnación on a surreal journey of cultural and spiritual awakening, set in a California mission. Guided by Calaca Flaca—an irreverent, Día de los Muertos-inspired skeleton narrator—the piece blends humor, tradition, and identity through vivid visuals, puppetry, and music.
The film is deeply rooted in a complex history, much like that of San Francisco’s Mission District and countless other mission communities across California. Among its artistic highlights are original shadow puppets, scenic design by Victor Cartagena, and a captivating score composed by Richard Marriott and Cascada de Flores.
After the 30-minute screening, stay for an artist talk and Q&A with Larry Reed and original collaborators, including lead shadow performer I Made Moja; Carlos Barón, voice of Calaca Flaca and the Padre; scenic designer Victor Cartagena; and a live musical performance by Cascada de Flores.
