Beyond technique, close embrace invites us into a different way of being together. It is a shift in mindset and relational presence. In this class, we’ll explore the versatile flow of close embrace. We’ll begin by grounding in our own inner quiet, then build a luscious shared embrace rooted in deep listening. We’ll explore refinements in the embrace itself, such as fascial vs. skin-level touch, which supports rolling and flowing within the connection. Finally, we’ll explore how this flowing embrace inspires new movement and dynamics, integrating it as a responsive and expressive thread in our wider Fusion dance.

Please do your best to arrive on time to class if you plan to attend. 𝐴𝑛𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 20 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑎𝑠𝑘𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑣𝑜𝑖𝑑 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑏𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠

Jay has been fusion dancing since 2013 and fell in love with the embodied, meditative, and conversational nature of partner dance. They started teaching fusion in 2021 out of a desire to dance with their housemates during lockdown and have since taught at various arts festivals and social gatherings. With extensive teaching experience as a climbing coach and academic TA, Jay loves identifying themes of movement and breaking them down into small, digestible, practicable pieces. As a fusion teacher, they encourage dancers to play and explore axis within a given technique to find the balance that’s fit for their style. They love facilitating experiences where people can feel connected and confident in their bodies.

Jonathan is a musician with decades of experience playing the piano and singing in choirs. His first introduction to social dancing was through his college West Coast Swing club, and ever since then he has been hooked. Although he only discovered fusion a year ago, it has rapidly become his new favorite dance style due to its potential for freeform musicality. As a DJ, he strives to highlight music from a wealth of diverse genres in order to craft a dance experience that is fresh, genuine, and deeply connected.

Amber integrates her experience in somatics, neuroscience, and dance to connect with others through music and movement. She thinks of herself as an accidental DJ - encouraged by her dance partner to share her music selection with dancers out in the wild. And now she loves doing so! She likes her music the way she likes her dances: rich with story, texture, dynamic range, and emotion to foster connection on and off the dance floor. She teaches Fusion and Ballroom Dance, is a nuerodivergent advocate and coach, and DJ's. www.sensoryschool.org

Jonathan Liu started dancing through his local West Coast Swing college club in 2013 and has been hooked ever since. Over the years, he has also picked up experience in Tango, Blues, Brazilian Zouk, Contemporary and (most belovedly) Fusion dance. A scientist by training, he loves to approach partner dance from a first principles-based perspective, grounding lessons in simple fundamentals rather than complex patterns. As a regular DJ in the Bay Area, he also is incredibly passionate about incorporating musicality into his teaching repertoire. As someone who picked up dance relatively later in life, Jonathan is a strong believer that anyone can learn to dance, and that everything is more fun when approached from a curious student’s perspective. Come to class to take a deep dive into various facets of partner dance, and most importantly – to have fun!

Angela Heyun is curious about everything embodiment and improvisation. She creates spaces for moving at the pace of being and feeling, learning in connection, and going into the unknown together. Her key influences are Tango, Zouk, and Contact Improvisation, along with West Coast Swing, Qi Gong, Contemporary Dance, and Butoh. She primarily teaches Contact Beyond Contact, and is organizing Fusion and Microfusion in Las Vegas.
