About the event
San Diego Polynesia!
Today’s Bahia Resort Hotel started out in 1953 as Bill and Mary Evans’ Bahia Motor Hotel. Their Evans Hotels company (Bahia, Catamaran, Lodge at Torrey Pines) was the first leaseholder of San Diego’s newly developed Mission Bay Aquatic Park. Mary initially thought Bill’s idea of a motel on the edge of a stinky swampland would never work. But after it was developed, the city’s Mission Bay park turned out pretty darned successfully, after all…
This is a view of the Bahia Motor Hotel sign and entrance, early 1960s. Check out that 1960 Chevy Brookwood station wagon and the ‘57 Ford Fairlane!
It’s part of my talk on San Diego Mid-Century Modern Vacation Resorts, 1pm Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Tiki Oasis. Be there. It’ll be fun!
