Pat Travers was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Soon after picking up the guitar at age 12, he saw Jimi Hendrix perform in Ottawa. Travers began playing in bands early in his teens; hisfirst bands were the Music Machine (not to be confused with the Californian psychedelic/garage band of the same name), Red Hot, and Merge, which played in clubs in theQuebec area.
While performing with Merge, he was noticed by rock artist Ronnie Hawkins, who invitedTravers to perform with him. In his early twenties Travers moved to London and signed a recording contract with the Polydor label.[2] His self-titled debut album was released in 1976, and featured bassist Peter "Mars" Cowling, who would become a mainstay in Travers' band for several years.[2] An appearance on the German TV show Rockpalast in November 1976 was later released on DVD under the title Hooked on Music. This performance showcases an early version of Travers' band featuring Cowling and drummer

Ultra, one of the original powerhouse rock bands of the San Antonio music circuit in the 70's has reunited. The band has shared the stage with some of the premier rockers of the day including, Alvin lee and Ten Year s After, Pat Travers, Blackfoot, Moxy, Wishbone Ash, legs Diamond and of course the notorious Sex Pistol's show at Randy's Rodeo in 1978. The Sex Pistols' date was one of only 7 US tour dates and considered the crown jewel of the US tour.
Ultra was honored and enshrined into the Texas legacy Hall of Fame in 2011. After Ultra's performance at the awards show, Margaret Moser with the Austin Chronical had this to say, "Ultra's set lit the still smoldering fire and brought the house down, leaving the unsuspecting stage scorched and smoking”.
Ultra is Kat Dawn on vocals, Galen Niles and larry McGuffin on guitars, Tom Canchola on bass /vocals and Rene Segura on drums/vocals.
As Jack Orbin from Stone City Attractions said at the Texas legacy show, “Ultra was one of those bands that the record companies missed the boat on...could of been a timing thing who knowsn They were definitely one of the best things to come out of San Antonio."
