Lecture: From Factory to Studio: Readymade Objects in Contemporary Art with Lana Meador

How did a common urinal become a prized sculpture in a museum collection? Lana Meador, SAMA’s Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, will examine the history of Marcel Duchamp’s readymade artworks—including that infamous plumbing fixture—along with contemporary artists’ fresh perspectives on everyday objects. With a focus on works currently on view in "Readymade Remix: New Approaches to Familiar Objects," Meador will consider how artists engage with the concept of readymade in new ways. Through methods such as altering, deconstructing, or layering mass-produced materials, the artists in "Readymade Remix" bring forward complex histories and meanings. Meador will explore the journey from factory to studio—and to SAMA’s galleries—to reflect on ideas about authorship and authenticity and the circulation of objects, along with personal and collective experiences.

Lana Meador joined the San Antonio Museum of Art’s curatorial department in 2015 and currently serves as the Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. She has worked on over a dozen exhibitions at SAMA, including as curator for "Marilyn Lanfear: Material Memory" (2018), "Ángel Rodríguez-Díaz: The Goddess Triptych Reunited" (2024), "Lovers & Fighters: Prints by Latino Artists in the SAMA Collection" (2024), and "Gateway: Carlos Rosales-Silva, Pase Usted," a site-specific mural that launched SAMA’s Gateway project series (2023). Lana received her BA in English from The University of Texas at Austin and MA in Art History from Texas Christian University.
