The Kickapoo Creek flows through Bronte from Oak Creek Lake. In the 1950s, the Kickapoo flooded the tiny west Texas town located just north of San Angelo. The creek is a namesake of the Kickapoo Indians who traversed the area when headed to El Naciimiento, Mexico, towards the end of the Civil War. At the Battle of Dove Creek, these Indians successfully thwarted an attack by the Confederate Cavalry and then ransacked West Central and Southwest Texas on their trek from San Angelo to Eagle Pass and to their new Mexico home southwest of there. Some Kickapoo stayed in Eagle Pass where today the tribe runs a casino.
Borrowing from the storied past of the Kickapoo Creek, the Kickapoo Creek Band out of Bronte has received rave reviews for their performances. The 6-piece band cut their chops initially as the praise band at the First Baptist Church in Bronte. When Bronte held a festival a little over a year ago, organizers asked the band to perform for a street dance. Since then, the band has opened for Cory Morrow, Jack Ingram, and Mike Ryan.
The band has honed its repertoire in 1990s country with Texas and Southern blues and rock influences from ZZ Top, Joe Walsh, and tangentially The Dire Straits. They also perform all of the Texas Country and Red Dirt favorites from the past two decades.
The 6-person band is made up by Kevin Meeks (Vocals, Lead Guitar); Ryan Jones (Rhythm Guitar); Whitney Jones (Vocals, Rhythm Acoustic Guitar); Max Cook (Fiddle); Ryan Young (Bass); and Brad Cooper (Drums).
The Kickapoo Creek Band performs Saturday night, May 17, 2025, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Arc Light Sports Bar & Grill inside the Clarion Hotel, 441 Rio Concho Dr. Come and listen and dance to some great local music! No cover!
