The Micro World of Insect Photography

Join naturalist Russ Aguilar for an adventure through the world of insects, as we explore the shoreline of Lake Merced. Russ will share techniques for capturing photos of the insects we find in the area, from beetles and bumblebees to butterflies and damselflies.

Walk Leader: Russ Aguilar

Russ is a science teacher and naturalist from Marin County. He began his career in environmental education with the National Park Service, which took him to 6 states and the District of Columbia and inspired him to connect urban communities to the natural resources we all share. Originally, he chose to focus on bugs to help his students overcome their fears around being outdoors, and he is enraptured by the beauty, diversity, and intensity of the invertebrate world.

Details:

The walk will follow paths along the edge of Lake Merced, exploring Lake Merced Meadow and habitat restoration sites in the area. The walk will be under 2 miles and over mostly level terrain. There will be opportunities to use iNaturalist or the Seek app, so if you want to participate make sure to install the app ahead of time!

Preparation:

Bring your favorite photography equipment, whether your smartphone or camera. Bring a hat, a bottle of water, and walking shoes.

Meeting Locations:

Meet at the Lake Merced Parking Lot at the north end of the lake.

Transportation and Parking:

Free parking is available at the site. Several Muni lines, including the 18 and 29, drop off right near the meeting location.

Weather:

Rain will cancel. We will email participants if we decide to cancel walk.
