As climate change intensifies, the world is getting riskier and presenting unprecedented challenges for insurance owners, regulators, and stakeholders alike. In unpredictable climates, both environmentally and politically, insurance has the chance to play a pivotal role and provide communities the chance to prepare, as well as rebuild stronger and more resilient, pre- and post-disaster. In Southern California, we are seeing the consequences of climate change and how it interacts with insurance now, from wildfires to sea level rise. As climate risk escalates, we’re not just asking what we can insure, but who and what we must insure to protect equity, dignity, and long-term viability for frontline communities, and what emerging resources can help us meet this goal amidst the region's unique challenges. Insurance, in this moment, becomes not just a financial instrument—but a tool of justice, foresight, and resilience.
The Understanding Risk & Insurance Solutions Workshop is hosted in partnership between the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative, the Center for Sea Level Rise Solutions, and Resilient Cities Catalyst, with generous contributions from Ocean Science Trust and Fugro. Together, we’re leveraging our collaborative capacity, networks, and partnerships to support knowledge building to develop insurable, resilient, and equitable communities.
This full day workshop will be hosted in-person in San Diego at the Sherman Heights Community Center (2258 Island Avenue, San Diego) from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. The morning learning exchange will feature keynote presentations and flash talks, as well as an interactive ideation and networking activity. The afternoon will provide an opportunity for attendees to choose and participate in various breakout workshop sessions that will dive deeper on key insurance topics, followed by a world cafe activity. Breakfast and lunch will be included with registration. Below is a high level agenda for the day; speakers will be announced soon.
