Advanced Skills for Play Therapy with Child Survivors of Trauma

Play therapy provides opportunities for children to experience safety, connection, and free

expression – all imperative processes for trauma recovery in children. When equipped with

advanced knowledge and skills to conceptualize the sequelae of trauma, play therapists can better address children’s trauma responses. In this workshop, participants will learn about the effects of trauma and apply advanced skills to use in play therapy with child survivors of trauma.

Info: Participants will describe how trauma impacts various domains of functioning (somatic,

relational, emotional, and cognitive)

Participants will identify relevant neuroscientific principles and models applicable to

play therapy with child survivors of trauma

Participants will discuss nondirective and directive play therapy approaches as well as

interventions and techniques to address symptomatology associated with childhood

trauma

Info: Participants will understand how states of regulation/dysregulation impact a child

survivor’s engagement in the playroom

Participants will discuss caregiver consultation for child survivors of trauma

Participants will understand how to facilitate trauma-sensitive play therapy in a

developmental and culturally responsive manner
