Book Launch: Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa & Kerrie Charnley present
"The Teachings of Mutton – A Coast Salish Woolly Dog".
The pelt of a dog named “Mutton” languished in a drawer at the Smithsonian for 150 years until it was discovered, almost accidentally, by an amateur archivist. This presentation tells some of Mutton's story and explores what he has taught us about Coast Salish Woolly Dogs and interwoven with Oral History, Origin Stories, and cultural perspectives on Woolly Dogs, blankets and robes and their significance by Coast Salish weavers, Knowledge Keepers, and Elders from Musqueam, Squamish, Stó:lō, Suquamish, Cowichan, Katzie, Snuneymuxw, and Skokomish cultures.
Liz and one of the Coast Salish coauthors, Kerrie, will read sections from the book telling the stories beginning with Coast Salish thoughts on naming and an origin story of how dogs came to live with humans and ends with the legacy Mutton has left us. In between are narratives of science, post-contact history, and the devastating impacts of colonization and Coast Salish Peoples’ current resurgence and sharing of their Knowledges. Binding it all together is Mutton's story—a tale of research, reawakening, and resurgence.
