Pie and Beer Day: The Other Holiday for the Rest of Us
In Utah, July 24th is Pioneer Day. But for many, it feels like a celebration they’re not part of.
Pie and Beer Day is the remix—irreverent, inclusive, and built on local flavor. A holiday for the rest of us.
It didn’t start as a big event. For years, it was a quiet, tongue-in-cheek tradition—a backyard rebellion whispered on porches and posted in jest. People who didn’t feel represented by Pioneer Day still wanted to gather, raise a glass, and celebrate where they were from, or who they’d become.
In 2014, Brad Wheeler made it official. He organized the first large-scale Pie and Beer Day pairing event, inviting local breweries and bakeries to team up and bring something real to the table. It was fun, it was flavorful, and it caught fire. The New York Times covered it. The Associated Press picked it up. A counter-holiday was born.
At its peak: 24 breweries, 24 bakeries, and thousands of slices of pie—apple, lemon, peach, pork, beef, pizza, Frito, ice cream—every kind of pie you could imagine. All paired with local craft beer—some of it brewed especially for the holiday. It’s not just fun. It’s a community.
This year, we’re leveling up.
We’re moving to Ballpark Stadium, one of Salt Lake City’s most creative and underserved neighborhoods. With support from Cornerstone Productions, we’re planning a full day of celebration—custom pie and beer pairings, local food, neighborhood activities, and a drone show to end the night.
But it’s more than a party. It’s a fundraiser.
Proceeds support the Ballpark Action Team, working to reimagine the stadium as a hub for art, culture, green space, and small business. The neighborhood faces food insecurity, underinvestment, and a life expectancy nearly seven years below the city average. But it’s also full of fierce, proud, talented people who are ready to help it reach its full potential.
Here’s what we need:
We’re signing up breweries now—and we’re looking for restaurants, bakeries, and chefs to create custom pie and beer pairings. We’ll match you with a brewery. You’ll provide 400 small servings of pie—either 25 pies cut into sixteenths, sheet tray slices, hand pies, or whatever fits your style.
Nicholas & Co. is generously offering $100 in ingredients to participating food partners.
If you’re a local chef, restaurateur, baker, or small business owner who believes in building community while doing good work—this is for you. Please join us. You can message us directly here on Facebook to get involved.
It’s not just a party.
It’s a plate of pie, a pour of beer, and a point of pride.
