A Christmas Carol Encounter: The Social Conscience of Charles Dickens

Mark Matheson, English Professor at the University of Utah, will celebrate the mythopoeic power of Charles Dickens and the impact of his moral imagination. "A Christmas Carol" became an immediate sensation upon publication in 1843. The story continues to shape our traditions and understanding of the Holiday Season – and the possibilities of human growth. We’ve all seen film and stage productions of this memorable tale, many of them successful and moving, but on this evening we shall go back to the written text to enrich our appreciation of Dickens’ popular, consequential work. Its theme of festivity in a society divided between rich and poor is resonant for us today, and we’ll discover more about Dickens' ethical vision through a return to the remarkable energies of his fictional prose. Read the book beforehand and you will encounter many surprises. The discussion is to be held at the Thomas S. Monson Center. A Q&A and refreshments will follow.
