Join us at the Salem Art Association for a hands-on and educational hour all about nesting birds! We’ll explore a fascinating variety of bird nests found right here in our region—learning how they’re built, what materials are used, and which birds call them home. We’ll cover some of the most common nesting birds in our area, along with where and when they tend to build their nests. You’ll learn about brood sizes, how long baby birds stay in the nest, and what kinds of food their parents bring them.
We’ll also talk about simple and effective ways to encourage birds to nest in your own backyard, creating a welcoming space for new feathered families.
To finish the class, each participant will build a bird nesting box to take home. The kits—crafted by volunteers from the Audubon Society—are easy to assemble, and a volunteer will be on hand to help guide us through the process. No carpentry experience is required, and the activity is suitable for all ages. Children are welcome with an accompanying adult.
Space is limited to 24 participants, so be sure to register early by emailing Julia at

The workshop will be held in the Art Barn courtesy of the Salem Arts Association. Please enter through the main door of the gallery and continue to the annex classroom.
We look forward to building with you—
and helping our local birds find a safe place to call home.
