2025 HSI Annual Meeting

Join Historic Salem, Inc. at our 2025 Annual Meeting on May 16th at the Hawthorne Hotel! Featuring a very special guest all the way from Savannah College of Art and Design, Prof. Dr. Robin B. Williams, we will "step up to history" and tune in to a talk about historic pavements as a cultural resource.

As the chair of architectural history at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Dr. Williams has traveled to 40 cities across North America to study their historic pavements. His expertise was highlighted in a TEDxSavannah talk:

"We're so used to streets dominated by asphalt and concrete that we've become blind to the earlier historic pavements that survive in cities across the country and we've utterly forgotten the critical role they played in helping modernize and make our cities livable. For decades, people fought to save historic buildings as a vital part of our heritage, but they made no effort to do the same for street pavement. We've all been so busy looking up at the vertical expressions of our past that we have become blind to the remarkable heritage that exists in plain view under our feet."

Following a brief report on HSI’s preservation undertakings over the past year and the election of new and returning board members, we will hear from Dr. Williams about his advocacy for preserving historic paving materials.
