About the event

Archaeology Dig Experience
Have you ever wanted to be an archaeologist? Maybe you are curious about what exactly archaeologists do in the field? Now you can become a member of our research team as we conduct excavations at this historic site! You may discover colonial housewares, ancient tools, or something even more mysterious. No matter what we find, you will learn about the process and science of archaeology, get hands-on experience with archaeological tools and materials, and contribute to the ongoing research at America’s Stonehenge.

Participation is $75 per person to cover the cost of materials used during the excavation and training aids.

What’s included?
Registration for this archaeological experience will include online training materials, equipment, four hours of field work on the site, as well as admission to the site and museum.

Training Materials:
To allow everyone to get right to work on the day of the excavation, we will provide you with online training materials prior to the day of the dig. This will include written materials and videos describing the use and function of certain tools, how to document an excavation, and the methodology of field work.

Equipment:
Tools will be provided for you to use throughout the day. These will include shovels, trowels, sifters, measuring tapes, and everything else you will need to successfully excavate and document your site. You are welcome to bring your own archaeological tools if you have them.

Field Work:
The main event! Your participation in this experience will include four hours of field work on the site. Working in a small group under the supervision of the museum’s curator, you will learn about the methodology and practice of archaeology in a hands-on environment. While archaeology can be hard work, this will be a learning experience for all. We will take frequent breaks to discuss the ongoing work and help each other to succeed.

Museum Admission:
Once field work is completed for the day, you will be welcome to tour the main site and museum and learn more about the history of this ancient hill!

What to Bring?
To ensure everyone has a fun and safe learning experience, it is important to wear comfortable clothing and to come prepared with beverages, snacks, and lunch.

Clothing:
It is important to dress for the weather. In September and October, this can be anything from 80 degrees and sunny to 40 degrees and rainy. If the weather is deemed too severe to work, we will move the date of the excavation to the rain date. However, you should be dressed to work outdoors in a range of temperatures and conditions. Close-toed shoes are required for field work. Sturdy sneakers, hiking shoes, or boots are recommended as these will provide support and protection while working. Work gloves are also recommended.

Nourishment:
We will provide bottled water at the dig site. However, you are encouraged to bring electrolyte drinks or other beverages depending on your taste and health requirements. You are also encouraged to bring snacks to replenish your energy throughout the day. Towards the end of our field work, we will have time to sit down and discuss our excavation. You are welcome to bring a bagged lunch to enjoy at this time as well.

Who can participate?
Age:
This is a real archaeology dig and is recommended for adults. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Experience:
This excavation is open to all skill-levels! Whether you are an experienced archaeologist or just have a passion for history you are welcome to come learn more about this site.

Ability:
Field work can be physically demanding, but this event is open to all abilities. It is recommended that participants be able to lift up to twenty pounds, crouch, and work outdoors for extended periods of time. This is intended to be a learning experience so we will tailor the work to ensure everybody is comfortable and safe. If you have any questions or concerns about the level of work, please discuss this with our staff in confidence.

What to expect?
When you register for the archaeological experience, you will be sent additional information by email regarding the site and what work will be conducted on the day of the excavation. Closer to the date, you will also receive your training materials as well as a confirmation of your reservation. If you have any questions, please contact us at aW5mbyB8IHN0b25laGVuZ2V1c2EgISBjb20= or 603-893-8300.

Refund policy:
There is a strict limit of 6 participants per day. Because of this, tickets are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend, you will be issued a store credit which can be used toward a future visit.

Rain Date:
In the event of rain, this event will be rescheduled to Sunday, September 28th.
