Join us for a crucial and timely conversation: "Community Disruptions | Community Displacements: Black People BE Moved: Musicians Respond."
In conjunction with our Rondo Community Music Series, we are hosting a powerful in-person panel discussion on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. We have invited musicians, vocalists, and spoken word artists with deep connections to Walker West, the Twin Cities, and the Rondo community to share their insights on music's role in responding to displacement.
This discussion will address the global movement of removing marginalized groups by connecting local histories, such as the effects of the I-94 and I-35W construction on Black communities in the Twin Cities and the removal of Black families from Edina, to international stories like the historic destruction of District Six in Capetown, South Africa, highlighting how these worldwide decisions constitute a global pattern of displacement.
Our panelists will explore how composers and artists have addressed issues of displacement in the context of urban renewal, "slum removal," and gentrification. This is an essential conversation for anyone interested in history, social justice, and the power of music to reflect and respond to community challenges.
