Adventures in History - 1843: Preserving Food by Pickling

Summer gardens yielded so much food, and early settlers needed ways to preserve the harvest to enjoy during the cold winter months.

Cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, and other fresh vegetables were preserved through “pickling.” Learn the history of this method, make your own brine, prepare your vegetables, and pack the jar. Everyone takes home their jar to share with the family.

This adventure is for kids entering grades 3 through 6. The two-hour "history lesson” provides a hands-on opportunity for kids to step back in time and experience what life was like in the 1800s, doing what kids did on a summer day back then. Designed to encourage interest in our local history, kids will come home after their adventure with mementos and activities to continue learning on their own.

Please plan on sending a snack for your child to enjoy during break time.
