DAVID MASLANKA - QUINTET NO. 4 FOR WINDS (2008)
Our spring concert features composers' love of nature moving through time. Selections from Beethoven's famous pastoral symphony begin with a scene by the brook where birds such as the nightingale, quail and cuckoo can be heard and end in a merry gathering of country folk. Beethoven loved to walk in the country, and this inspired his music.
Chabrier's Suite Pastorale looks back to his childhood in the Auvergne, a beautiful region in south central France, and the dance of the villagers there. The landscape of the region varies greatly, with valleys, mountains, meadows and forests.
Mahler writes “Wie en Naturlaut” (Like the sound of nature) on the first page of his first symphony. The Ländler dance was written for illustrations for the poem Der Trompeter von Sachingen and represents a wayfarer crossing the fields in the morning, rejoicing in the beauty of the world.
Wind Quintet No. 4 was premiered in 2008 by the Florida Wind Quintet. In remarks made from the stage before the performance, Maslanka said that music connects the soul to the mind. He said he has no idea where the music or the consciousness comes from, but it is the most essential part of who we are. Maslanka also said that music, for us, in the space and time of the world, is about the transformation of pain and suffering. The wild and intense final movement will shock you.
