The UWI Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA),, Theatre Arts Unit, will be hosting a student led production – Theatre for Children - on Friday May 9th at 10am and Saturday May 10th, 2025 at 5pm at the Learning Resource Centre, UWI. Theatre Arts students will be directing the production “Little Miss Ixora” by Kurtijah Ross, primarily for viewing by children ages 6 to 12.
A "sensory friendly" show will also be held on Saturday 10th May at 2pm.
The play, “Little Miss Ixora” is a modern Trinidadian twist of “Red Riding Hood” as it follows the young Afro-Trinidadian girl, Ixora.
Ixora is a lively, curious and rather talkative child. The plot of “Little Miss Ixora” centres around her journey through the forest as she heads to her grandmother’s house to drop off a basket of homemade tea and bread along with various fruits which were sent by her mother.
Through the varying twists and turns of this play, Ixora learns a valuable lesson on obedience.
Michailean Taylor, Lecturer/Coordinator of the event, notes that ‘the experience of the theatre is vital for children since it can stimulate the imagination and engage the emotions. Theatre for Children creates the possibility of dialogue and especially for audiences of children, vocal and physical interaction, which is not usually possible with film or television. Mr Taylor believes that the experience of live theatre will, therefore, be both rewarding and memorable.
