About the Program
Audivi presents the universally popular English oratorio, Messiah, here with an orchestra of Baroque specialist instrumentalists. This performance features historically accurate orchestration, creating a sound that is more intimate and clear than many popular adaptations; this authentic approach emphasizes a balance of dynamics and texture derived from Handel’s original intent.
The 53-movement work is divided into three parts, with Part I focusing on prophecies of the Messiah and his birth (Nativity), Part II covering the passion, death, resurrection, and ascension, and Part III emphasizing the promise of resurrection and everlasting life. Complex vocal lines, dramatic expression, and the compositional technique of “word painting” bring this quintessential Baroque oratorio to life.
About the Artists
Audivi celebrates its thirteenth season as a professional vocal ensemble based in Detroit, Michigan. Performing music of all eras, Audivi has appeared at conventions and festivals including ACDA Central and North Central conventions, the AGO New England convention, and several tours. Equally at home with familiar and unusual repertoire, the professional singers frequently perform one-on-a-part, and present music rarely heard from other ensembles, including Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles. Audivi has brought in Baroque specialist instrumentalists for Detroit-area historical-performance premieres of Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers and Bach’s Mass in B minor. The singers in the group perform with top ensembles around the world. Many of the singers also have successful conducting careers of their own, and one of the co-founders now serves as music director for Chanticleer.
Audivi often joins the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as a larger chorus, expanding its numbers to accommodate projects as needed by the orchestra. Recent performances have included Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9, Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Puccini’s Turandot, Mahler’s Symphony no. 2, Bizet’s Carmen, and Orff’s Carmina Burana.
Audivi typically presents several projects per year in Michigan, mostly in the southeast region but also having visited Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, and more. The ensemble welcomes interest from talented singers who wish to make music at the highest possible level, whether for chamber projects or for symphonic choruses. Audivi also does educational outreach work for collegiate and K-12 programs.
