Come and share an immersive experience celebrating nature by walking up Maunga Kākaramea/Rainbow Mountain. Whether your legs are tired from ‘Trek the Forest’ and you need a recovery walk, or you want to bring the family along, we'd love to see you.

Time: Arrive by 8:45 AM for a 9 AM start
Where: Maunga Kākaramea (Rainbow Mountain) Summit Track
Getting there: It’s located 26 km south-east of Rotorua, beside SH 5 (the Rotorua-Taupo highway). Coming from Rotorua, the carpark is just past the turnoff for SH 38 (the Murupara/ Waikaremoana highway), on the left side of the road. There is a free car park and a long-drop toilet (BYO toilet paper).
Distance: 6.8 km return to the summit, or 1 km return to the crater lake
Elevation gained: 350 m
Difficulty: Easy to the crater lake and moderate to the summit
At the summit, embrace this sacred site for the people of Ngati Tahu-Ngati Whaoa, and enjoy a 360-degree view of the area, including Mt Tarawera; Lakes Tarawera, Rotomahana, and Rerewhakaaitu to the north; the Paeroa Range to the west; the Urewera Ranges and Kaimanawa Forest to the east; and Mt Tauhara, Lake Taupō, and the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park to the south.
"Collective" indicates a group coming together for a shared purpose and common goal. The aim of this collective is to embody kaitiakitanga, "environmental stewardship," by integrating movement, experiencing nature, embracing connection, and acknowledging our traditional custodians.
This community event is delivered by Melissa, a participant in our Mentorship Programme, empowering outdoor enthusiasts to lead their own community-based outdoor projects.
