Celebrate Sakura with Sashiko

We are delighted to work with Dianne Spottiswood Miller, a sustainable textiles tutor based in Leith, who will show you the art of Sashiko embroidery.

You’ll create a stitched square featuring simple Sashiko motifs, or a short haiku, that celebrates the planting of the Sakura cherry trees in Fife. These pieces will form part of a collaborative wall hanging —blending poetry and textile tradition in a lasting tribute.

Dianne runs regular repair cafés and community projects with Edinburgh Remakery, alongside partners such as the National Museum of Scotland and the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Sashiko is a Japanese stitching technique rooted in mindfulness and repair. Using rhythmic running stitches, it revives worn textiles with beauty and intention. These practices reflect the underlying philosophies of Wabi-Sabi - embracing imperfection - and Mottainai, a deep respect for resources and the stories they carry.

There is a workshop at 1.30pm and one at 2.30pm. Please select the free ticket for your preferred workshop. This is a practical session in a gazebo in the park.

These workshops are run as part of the Sakura Cherry Tree Party at Rosyth Public Park on Saturday 6th December from 1pm to 3.30pm which will be attended by Consul General of Japan! Please do come along.
