UE5 and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion 2006 v. Oblivion 2025 - The New, The Old, & The Ugly

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was a dramatic success, and the new remastered version has managed to improve on this classic using the Unreal Engine. Tim Lindsey worked on the original version, and shares his insights into it and UE5.​

​The New - discussing Unreal 5's renderer and how impressive the upgrade effort from Virtuos and Bethesda is considering what we gave them as source.

​The Old - Oblivion still feels like Oblivion because the backend is still entirely Gamebryo.

​The Ugly - 3 years, often 6 days a week, and mandatory 10 hour days for 6 months.

Tim Lindsey is a veteran game developer with over 27 years of experience, spanning environment art, level design, technical art, and gameplay engineering. He has contributed to 14 shipped titles at studios including Bethesda, Hi-Rez, CCP, and Xaviant, and currently serves as partner and lone artist at Apothecary Games. Tim is actively involved in game education, focusing on practical teaching methodologies and exploring innovative intersections of AI and design.
