“Jeremiah” is an early drama by Karol Wojtyla that highlights the question of human identity, which will be a central theme of John Paul II’s teaching. The drama draws primarily on the biblical Book of Jeremiah, but echoes of Slowacki, Wyspianski, Calderon and inspirations from the mystical poetry of St. John of the Cross are present in the play.
The drama is an intellectual struggle of the then young poet with the cruelty of fate and history. The Book of Jeremiah, which is the main reference point of the drama, tells the story of the prophet called by God to proclaim the threat of the destruction of Jerusalem and exile of the Israelites. The prophet’s mission was to convey to the people of Judea God’s words and call to repentance. Unfortunately, they did not want to listen to him and the foretold calamity was soon realized.
In the drama, the author refers to Polish history but the play carries a universal message. Wojtyła raises the great question of national identity. However, the concept of homeland appears here not as a political or ideological category, but a spiritual one.
