Anyone aged 16 and older is invited to open auditions for the historical play, Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson. It’s a small-cast play made up of four women and one man.
The characters are Henrietta Leavitt: 30s, brilliant, meticulous, excited, Margaret Leavitt (her sister): 30s, homebody, creative, sweet, Peter Shaw: 30s (to early 40s), astronomer’s apprentice and Henrietta’s love interest, Annie Cannon: 40s, the leader, terse and sure, grows into a firebrand, and Williamina Fleming, 50s, smart as a whip and fun. Margaret and Henrietta sing “For the Beauty of the Earth.”
Synopsis from the DPS website: "Silent Sky is the true story of Henrietta Leavitt and explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Without access to a telescope or the ability to express an original idea, Henrietta uses her free time to measure the light and distance of stars. Her work, as well as the achievements of her co-workers, resonates through astronomy to this day.
"Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications; Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth. Henrietta must balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love."
