BUILDING WITH LOAD-BEARING STONE

Kevin Percevault and Jim Larson are exploring cutting-edge techniques in shaping eco-conscious architecture. Post-tensioning (done by drilling holes through blocks of stone, running cables through them, and then tightening everything down), provides superior load-bearing strength plus all of the long-lasting benefits that come with using stone.

The evening will include a demonstration where the Symposium artists test the limits of tensioned stone examples built on-site at Snow Marine park, followed by a conversation next door at the Sail, Power, & Steam museum about how to implement these techniques in the building arts.

Kevin Percevault is a third-generation French stone carver living in the U.K. In addition to his sculpture practice, he works as a lead mason for Stonemasonry Company Ltd.

Jim Larson is an artist and builder. His work considers our time-based habitation of this environment. He seeks to understand how solid geometry constructs and destructs the accessibility of space. Larson lives and works in Portland, Maine.
