About the event

The Rochester Symphony Orchestra Proudly Presents "Hope and Gratitude," the Definitive Fall Concert
Join the RSO for an unforgettable evening of excellence and musical inspiration as it opens the 64th season, on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. with “Hope and Gratitude.” Our “Journey of Life” begins in Russia with four famous composers who lived and composed classical masterpieces in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The evening begins with the "Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila," an exciting orchestral piece composed by Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) for his opera in five acts. Glinka is often regarded as the father of Russian music.

Next, we will explore the masterful "Lieutenant Kijé Suite," composed by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) for a 1934 film. The suite tells the story of a fictional character, Lieutenant Kijé, in a satirical tale about the reign of Emperor Paul I of Russia. This plot revolves around a transcription error that leads to the creation of a fictional officer, culminating in a hoax that the emperor discovers, forcing the creators into a final lie about the soldier's death.

Following this, we will hear "In the Steppes of Central Asia," composed by Alexander Borodin (1833-1887). This piece depicts the meeting of Russian and Central Asian cultures in the vast Central Asian steppes. As the piece progresses, the melodies intertwine, and Borodin introduces a "traveling" theme that conveys the sound of horses and camels plodding along. Ultimately, only the Russian theme is heard at the end.

The concert will close with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s (1840-1893) stunning Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 (Pathétique). This symphony, completed in August 1893, is notable as Tchaikovsky’s final completed work. The composer conducted its first performance in Saint Petersburg only nine days before his untimely death. The term (Pathétique), derived from the French, suggests a blend of passion and poignancy, reflecting Tchaikovsky's internal struggles and views on the human condition.

Under the capable and inspired direction of Maestro Zeljko Milicevic, the RSO invites you to experience this remarkable evening of classical music, celebrating the rich heritage of Russian composers. The concert will take place at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, located at 620 Romeo Road, Rochester, Michigan, on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets for this extraordinary performance are $30 for adults and $5 for students, offering an exceptional opportunity for all music lovers to enjoy an evening of cultural enrichment.
