The Swellendam Bewarea/ Conservancy (SBC) invites young and old, local or just passing through, to join us for our first-ever Science Café!
What is a science café?
A science café is an informal event where experts in a certain field present a topic in understandable language to a broad audience, allowing everyone, including those not involved in science, to participate in the conversation.
The goal:
To make science accessible and engaging for everyone, promoting dialogue and empowering the public to understand and discuss complex issues in a comfortable, non-intimidating
environment. Children of all ages are encouraged to attend.
Why hold it at a restaurant or café?
Casual venues are used to remove the barriers between experts and the public (the proverbial “ivory tower of science”) and to allow for a relaxed atmosphere. There is no charge to attend but we encourage attendees to support the hosting establishment by ordering a drink or something to eat.
Why Swellendam Science Café?
An abundance of knowledgeable people call Swellendam (and the surrounds) their home and the SBC want to facilitate the knowledge transfer.
Why African Prominence Restaurant?
A perfect outdoor/ indoor setting that lends itself to all kinds of talks and interactive presentations with a shared vision to connect people and places. Should you wish to join them for an immersive African dining experience after the talk, please make a reservation by calling 068 729 6767.
About our first guest speaker – Geoff Burgess
I was born in the UK and immigrated to SA when I was 8 years old. I have always been interested in all forms of wildlife. I have a passion for preserving wildlife and for educating people on how they can do their part in living and let live.
Why this talk?
There is so much fear for the not so soft and cuddly creatures, and I want to help people understand their fear and overcome it.
