About the event

Soil Blocking & Overwintering Veggies
This hands-on workshop introduces soil-blocking for seed starting without plastic. We'll also chat the basics of overwintering vegetables.

About this Event

Join us for a hands-on workshop introducing soil blocking, an eco-friendly way to start seeds without using plastic pots. We’ll show you how to mix the perfect soil, make and seed soil blocks, and get seedlings off to a strong, healthy start.

We’ll also chat about the basics of overwintering vegetables so you can keep growing (and harvesting!) even through the colder months. You’ll learn which crops do well in winter, how to protect them, and how to plan for a garden that keeps producing year-round.

For gardeners of all levels, this workshop will teach you how to grow more with less waste!

Workshop spots are limited, register to reserve your spot!

Recommended contribution: $10 - $25 (Actual cost of workshop: $14)

Your contribution helps us subsidize these educational opportunities to ensure that all folks have access to the joy of learning about & celebrating our food systems!

Instructor: Katy Latham, One Straw Society Market Garden Coordinator & Agriculture Mentor

Katy Latham is an enthusiastic food grower on the Sunshine Coast with a degree in Sustainable Food Production, and a Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture at UBC Farm. She founded Three Sisters Certified Organic Farm in Gibsons, BC, headed up a certified organic greenhouse and seedling company, and was a founding member of an organic food collective.

While warm season greenhouse crops, like tomatoes, are her absolute favourite, she also enjoys growing a lot of other market vegetables including greens, brassicas, root vegetables, onions, herbs and flowers.

Katy Latham has been farming at One Tiny Farm since 2020. She began working with One Straw Society by facilitating workshops in greenhouse growing and winter gardening, then became the lead for the greenhouses at One Tiny Farm, and is now is the Market Garden Coordinator for the Tiny Farm's food production, both in and outside the greenhouses.
