"Si j'étais un arbre" - OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPATION // APPEL À PARTICIPATIONS (CACOUNA)

Two Rimouski-based artists - the photographer Joan Sullivan and the musician James Darling - are looking for readers in both French and English to come to Cacouna on Friday 22nd August to participate in a public reading of 100 messages of hope ("messages d'espoir"). These messages have been penned by visitors to the "Si j'étais un arbre" art exhibit in Cacouna's Saint-Georges Church. Visitors hang their hand-written messages onto the branches of a wishing tree located inside the church.

*** If you would like to be part of this collective action and read on the day, please be at the Church at 2pm on Friday 22nd August. If the weather permits, the readings will take place on the Church steps.***

If you haven't yet added your message of hope to this wishing tree, you have until the end of August to do so.

The artists created "Si j'étais un arbre" ("If I were a tree") following Canada's historic forest fires in 2023. Fifteen silk trees three-metres long are hung from the ceiling to create an imaginary forest "on fire". Visitors are invited to wander through this forest to touch the silk trees in order to imagine what a tree might feel when the flames arrive.

Given the increased frequency of forest fires across Canada, the artists hope to create a sense of solidarity and hope for the future by showcasing the collective voices in French and English that visitors have hung on the wishing tree. Come add your voice to this collective effort!

Deux artistes basés à Rimouski – la photographe Joan Sullivan et le musicien James Darling – sont à la recherche de lecteurs d’un jour, francophones ou anglophones, pouvant se présenter à Cacouna le vendredi 22 août pour lire à voix haute une partie des quelques 100 messages d’espoir qui ont été écrits et déposés par les visiteurs dans un « arbre à souhaits » en marge de l’exposition « Si j’étais un arbre ». Cette exposition est en cours à l’intérieur de l’église Saint-Georges de Cacouna.

Si vous souhaitez écrire votre propre message d’espoir dans « l’arbre à souhait », vous avez jusqu’à la fin août pour le faire (l’église saint-Georges de Cacouna est ouverte en présence de l’artiste les vendredis de 13h à 17h). Les artistes ont créé « Si j’étais un arbre » ("If I were a tree") suite aux feux de forêts historiques ayant fait rage au Canada en 2023. Quinze arbres de soie de 3 mètres de haut ont été suspendus au plafond de l’église pour créer une forêt imaginaire en feu. Les visiteurs sont invités à déambuler à travers cette forêt et à toucher les arbres de soie pour tenter d’imaginer ce qu’un arbre ressent à l’arrivée des flammes.

Dans le contexte de la hausse des feux de forêts au Canada, les artistes souhaitent provoquer un mouvement de solidarité et d’espoir envers le futur en rendant publique la « voix » collective des messages que les visiteurs ont suspendus dans l’arbre à souhaits.
