Join the Tomás Rivera Library for R’Voices - R’Poetry, a creative writing workshop on the poetics of personal narrative, led by MFA student Fred Garcia. Turn your life experience into poetry–share your unique experience, connect with fellow first-gen students, and gain insight into the writing process through guided writing exercises and group discussions. Whether you’re a seasoned poet or just starting out, this workshop welcomes all students with a passion for voicing their story.
After attending this workshop participants will be able to:
Frederick Garcia (he/they) is a Xikanx poet and writer from Southern California, and a First-Year MFA graduate student that earned a BA in Creative Writing with a concentration in Poetry from UC Riverside in 2024. Their work explores identity, familial histories and inherited dynamics, and has been published in UC Riverside’s Mosaic Art & Literary Journal, Ancestral Futures Magazine, and Inlandia Institute’s 2022 Writing from Inlandia anthology. They are a 2024-25 Gluck Family Foundation Fellow at UCR ARTS and a recipient of UCR’s Vice Provost Excellence Fellowship Award. They’re currently writing towards a collection of poems that examine generationally inherited wounds and gifts.
