About the event

The Nation’s Guest: General Lafayette’s Return Visit, 1824-25
Celebration & Remembrance of Lafayette's Return Visit to the States when he toured all 24 states at the invitation of President Monroe including a visit to Gen. Enoch Poor's gravesite in Hackensack.

In Hackensack, he received a very warm welcome as described in this article by the late historian Kevin W. Wright, https://www.bergencountyhistory.org/_files/ugd/6adfb1_2752240cdc914af2a35f1c38a0e52d2c.pdf?index=true

At 1:30 pm our celebration includes a Story & Song presentation featuring Lafayette by Ridley and Anne Enslow.
This program explores the life of the Marquis de Lafayette, from his early years in the French court to his heroic role in the American Revolution. The show alternates between captivating historical narrative and live musical performances violin and hammered dulcimer, featuring songs from both from the American and French Revolutions, as well as compositions created specifically for Lafayette’s triumphant return to the United States in 1824-25. The performance also includes a poignant World War I anthem, “We’ll Pay Our Debt to Lafayette,” underscoring his enduring legacy. With the addition of a limberjack dressed as Lafayette, the program brings both music and history together in a heartfelt tribute to this French-American hero. We will have new exhibits including an elegant chair with original blue velvet upholstery that Lafayette sat in as he was honored on July 12, 1825 in Hackensack.

Tour the Museum Site and the Campbell-Christie House will be open for refreshments. The Outkitchen cooks are preparing a repast that General Lafayette might have enjoyed during his visit to Hackensack in 1825: Chicken with Rice, a Lobster Bisque, Gingerbread and a glass of Madeira.

Make a reservation or pay at the gate. BCHS members are free to this event. 100% goes to our mission and we are currently fundraising to build a museum at HNBL, we expect to breakground this summer.
