Erica Synths and Riga Music Week invite you to a workshop with Dr. Nicolas Bougaïeff - Techno Doctor.
Dr. Nicolas Bougaïeff will explore the fundamentals of how time is organized in electronic dance music. The session will begin by demystifying core rhythmic concepts such as pulse, meter, pulse train, polymeter, polyrhythm, tuplets, and polytemporality. He will clarify the distinctions between these often-confused terms through clear examples and discussion.
From there, Dr. Bougaïeff will introduce how polytemporality, the simultaneous unfolding of multiple temporal layers, functions as a guiding principle in his compositional thinking and performance setup. The workshop will conclude with a live modular demonstration, offering an inside look at his current system and techniques. Participants will experience firsthand how complex temporal structures can be shaped into flowing and expressive sound. Open to producers, performers, and curious listeners alike, this session bridges theory and practice, showing how temporal complexity can be approached creatively and musically without losing groove or clarity.
🟡 Nicolas Bougaïeff is a Canadian-born, Berlin-based electronic producer, performer, and theorist. With a PhD in minimal techno, Bougaïeff synthesizes rigorous academic methodologies with bold sonic experimentation. His releases on NovaMute and Mute push the boundaries of rhythmic perception, notably through his pioneering concepts of Pivot Mixing and Prime Rhythms.
