MARTIN ESPADA: Humanize the Dehumanized ~ July 14, 3:00-5:00 - Register at: bit.ly/3GVRzUL
National Book Award winner Martin Espada’s workshop will focus on the use of poetry to empathize with our immigrant neighbors. From Martin: “We’ll explore the reality that migrants share a common humanity with us. We’ll dig down into our own immigrant histories and search for parallels with contemporary struggles. We’ll confront the fact that, historically, the same people others would deport have always done the ‘dirty work’ in our country. We’ll read poems and, not least, we’ll write in the garden.”
MARK DOTY: Being Ourselves on the Page ~ July 21, 3:00-5:00 - Register at: bit.ly/4j7jwq1
From ground-breaking poet Mark Doty: “A deep paradox in American poetry lies in the fact that while LGBTQ+ individuals are generally thought of as outsiders, a glance at a list of major American poets–Whitman, Dickinson, Crane, Bishop, O’Hara, Swenson, Rich, Ashbery, and many more–reveals that we’re an extraordinary mainstream. This tension is actually fruitful.” Come explore being yourself on the page with a National Book Award winner and Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets!
DANEZ SMITH: Poems as Time Machines ~ July 28, 3:00-5:00 - Register at: bit.ly/43xXrw5
Says Danez: “Since the beginning, we’ve been obsessed with time. How does it move? How are we held within it? How can we move in and out of it? In this workshop, we’ll read a sampling of poems going forward, backwards, and deeper into time before designing our own machines (hint: it’s poems) that will move us across the timeline to discover what waits for us if we dive into time’s stream and let it carry us further into our imaginations.” Come create with the author of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize Finalist Bluff.
