“[Legacies] boasts a sonic maturation that's still firmly anchored by Thibodeau's standout voice and songwriting prowess.” —
Deau Eyes (aka Richmond, Virginia-based artist Ali Thibodeau) has revealed a new music video for the title track of her 2022 sophomore album Legacies, which resulted in recognition as one of NPR Music's 2023 Artists to Watch and Richmond’s highly competitive Newlin Music Prize. The cinematic video depicts an apocalyptic wedding brought to life with the help of her brother and longtime collaborator, Michael Thibodeau, who directed the clip. It was screened for the first time last night at Unity of Richmond Church where Deau Eyes performed music from Legacies with a string quartet. The performance is part of Deau Eyes’ Tour de Richmond, a 10-shows-in-12-days tradition that began last year as a way to connect with local fans and discover new venues around her hometown. The tour continues tonight through Saturday with three more events. See below for full details.
Of the “Legacies” music video, Thibodeau offers, “Our whole lives, Michael has followed me around with a camcorder and I used to create songs on our karaoke machine tape deck. We'd make home videos and alternate as the subject in every scene directed and every piece choreographed…The ‘Legacies’ video concept was brewing in my head as I recorded the song and would jet home to tell him all about the images in my mind. We spitballed on awkward bits of our childhood, the beautiful melodrama of tradition, and all the unlikely characters that we have crossed paths with over the years.”
Of Tour De Richmond, she adds, “What I've realized about Richmonders is that the support is abundant if you let it be. Our people show up if you have a solid music video idea or if you put on a killer show and I'm here for both the challenge and celebration in all of it!...TDR is a way to discover local venues, try new things and dig into diverse genres while being a tourist in your own backyard. There are so many talented RVA musicians and I'm lucky to be collaborating with so many of them on this tour.”
Recording Legacies over the course of four months, Thibodeau spent her days waitressing and her nights tracking, either in her own closet or the respective studios of her co-producers, Scott Lane and DJ Harrison. The 10-song set blends a multitude of genres and textures to create "pure alt-pop bliss” (Under the Radar) tailor-made for her "transcendent" vocals (Flood Magazine). NPR Music says the result “boasts a sonic maturation that's still firmly anchored by Thibodeau's standout voice and songwriting prowess.”
Thibodeau began working on her sophomore offering shortly after lending vocals to McKinley Dixon’s “Twist My Hair,” the closing track from the Richmond rapper’s excellent 2021 LP For My Mama And Anyone Who Look Like Her. Legacies serves as the follow-up to Deau Eyes’ 2020 debut Let It Leave, which was taped in a matter of days with longtime friends Jacob Blizard and Collin Pastore (known for their work with Lucy Dacus, illuminati hotties, and Julien Baker). Paste Magazine likens Let It Leave to "the recorded version of sharing a deep conversation with Thibodeau, as we bask in her skilled storytelling," and Stereogum calls the songs "confessional and open-hearted, layered and sly."
