Historical Changes in Bird Populations in the Lower Columbia Basin

Bill and Nancy LaFramboise will explore how bird populations in the Lower Columbia Basin have shifted and evolved. Drawing from historical literature, eBird data, and years spent observing in the field, they will uncover the stories behind the rise and fall of familiar species, from nuthatches and chickadees to sagebrush sparrows and pelicans. They will examine how urbanization, agriculture, changes in river systems, and fire have reshaped the region’s bird communities.

This presentation offers a data-rich, visually compelling look at both declines and new arrivals of species that define today’s avifauna in southeastern Washington. Join us for an engaging discussion and discover how these changes may affect the future populations of our local birds.

Bill and Nancy LaFramboise are local naturalists who have spent over 30 years living in the Lower Columbia Basin, though their explorations have taken them across the country. They are especially interested in local bird species and how, over time, environmental changes have affected these populations.
